5 Black-Woman-Owned Hair Care Businesses That Made Me Love Styling My Natural Hair
So, I grew up with A LOT of hair on my head.
Like “a lot” doesn’t even begin to encompass how much hair I had on my head. Sadly back in the late 90s/early 00’s, natural hairstyles (especially for 4C girls like myself) were not as common or embraced as they are now.
So, I grew up having an intense love/hate relationship with my hair. I loved that my hair was thick and long, but always felt like my curls weren’t the “good curls.”
And because natural hairstyles were not a thing when I was growing up, it meant that knowing how to take care of and style my hair was extremely difficult. But in 2019, I decided I needed to restart my relationship with my hair. So, I decided to go for this shaved hairstyle that I had always been dying to try.
This left me with hair only on the top of my head.
I have to say it was one of the best decisions I ever made—for my hair health and my confidence (but more about my journey with that in a future post).
Because I had less hair on my head, it gave me a lot more time and enthusiasm to devote towards developing a hair care routine. Then when COVID hit, it gave me even more time to research and try out new things.
So, for this week’s post, I wanted to share 5 black-owned, female-run hair care businesses that have not only helped me enjoy taking care of and styling my natural hair, but that have also given me so much confidence.
I hope that they are able to do the same for you!
I can’t even begin to tell y’all how many times I have lost my bonnet in my sleep over the years. And if you sleep with a regular pillowcase, losing your bonnet in your sleep means that your hair is rubbing up against rough material. This can create breakage and hair loss.
But thanks to Grace Eleyae’s innovative genius, she created what she calls “slaps,” aka a satin-lined cap. Lemme tell y’all these slaps are EVERYTHING! Stylish, protective, and always in place.
There is no better feeling in the world then when I run some argan oil though my hair at night, and take off my slap in the morning. My hair is nourished, silky and smooth. In addition to slaps, Grace Eleyae also sells pillow cases, hats, throw pillows, head bands and more.

Kreyol Essence
While I love to rock my natural hair, one of the really fun benefits of having short hair now is that I can be as experimental with my daily styles as I want. This means that I often rock wigs and ponytails. However, this also means that I have to be extra good about taking care of my hair/edges when I am not wearing them.
Castor oil is a really great hair oil to use when you are looking to strengthen and grow out your hair. So, when I was recently looking for more, I decided to go with a black-female-owned brand called Kreyol Essence. It was founded by Yve-Car Momperousse who wanted to provide more economic opportunities in her native Haiti. She has even pitched the brand on Shark Tank.
So far, I have only tried the lavender hibiscus oil, and I just love it for when I do hot oil treatments. The smell is divine!
The website boasts that Haitian black castor oil is also great for skin maintenance, and has been know to help fight acne, reduce joint pain and promote healthy skin.

Precious Tresses
I discovered Precious Tresses at a Black businesswomen’s conference back in 2016. The company was founded by Adrienne Moore and it features a two-product system that is meant to help promote hair growth specifically for black women. The first product is a moisturizing hair gel that is meant to keep your hair well hydrated. Then the next product is a hair butter that is meant to help seal in the moisture from the hair gel. This product is also ideal for two strand twists, coils, braids, cornrows, and growing out natural hair.
I haven’t used it consistently enough to speak on the hair growth benefits, but I love to use it when I’m doing a twist out look. It keeps my hair super moisturized.

Brush With The Best
Y’all… This is hands-down the greatest natural hair care tool ever created. If there is one thing you purchase from this list, I highly, highly recommend this brush—especially if you or your child has thick curly hair.
I LOVE this brush with an intense passion (lol). I mean y’all saw the picture of how much hair I used to have on my head. Growing up, I can’t even begin to tell you how many brushes my hair broke as my mom fought to get my hair into a pony tail. And while I have less hair on my head now, it’s still the same thickness. So, this brush has been amazing at helping me manage my hair and detangle my coils with ease—especially in the shower.
I even got the women of my family hooked on this brush. I brought it home once, and after my mom and my sister tried it for the first time, they immediately turned to me and said they wanted one for Christmas.
You’ll see a lot of dupes out there that are slightly cheaper, but I’m telling y’all don’t be cheap with this one. This is worth every single penny and then some. You’ll also be supporting a super kind and amazing black woman who has also had the magical honor of styling Issa Rae’s hair!
I actually got to meet Felicia Leatherwood and hear about her story at an event that we both spoke at, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

I don’t know if any of you have seen the Chris Rock documentary, Good Hair, but one of the saddest parts about that doc for me was the fact that people outside of the black community make a huge profit off of selling hair extensions to black women. So, I was super excited to thrown down my support for Kinky Curly Yaki when I discovered them. Founded by Vivian Kaye in 2012, Kinky Curly Yaki offers clip ins, wefts, wigs and more that prioritizes natural black hair textures.
Pictured above, I am wearing clip ins from the My Coils collection. This texture is considered a 4A/ afro kinky curly and I got 160 g in 16 inches. This is the most high quality black hair extensions I have ever worn. From the moment you take it out the package, you know that this hair did not come from your average beauty supply store round the corner.
It’s definitely not cheap, but because of the quality, it holds up really well over time. I bought my hair in 2016, and both of these photos were taken in 2018.
It’s definitely investment hair. But at least with this, “you get what you pay for” is actually a good thing.
